Bedroom wall art: fine art prints for a calm space

By Sofía Alegre Costa · Model and photographer · Last updated: 10 June 2026 · Read: 7 min

The bedroom is the room we show the least and use the most: it's where the day begins and ends. That's why the wall above the bed asks for something different from the one in your living room. Here, the goal isn't impact — it's calm. This guide will help you choose the right piece of art above the bed, in the right size and finish, for calming bedroom prints that make the room easier to fall asleep in and easier to wake up to.

What makes good bedroom wall art (and what to avoid)

A living room is viewed from the sofa, at a certain distance, often with people around. A bedroom is viewed up close, in silence, usually alone or with one other person. That changes everything about what works on the wall:

In short: for art above the bed, what ages best isn't the most dramatic image — it's the one you still love after a thousand mornings.

What size for above the bed

The rule is similar to the one for a sofa, with one twist: bedrooms tend to have slightly lower ceilings, and the bed takes up more wall width than it looks. For a queen-size headboard (roughly 150–160 cm / 60 in), aim for the work — or the set — to cover 50% to 70% of that width. In practice:

As a general rule, leave 15–20 cm (6–8 in) between the top of the headboard (or the bed, if you don't have one) and the bottom edge of the frame. If you'd like the full logic on sizing, height and viewing distance, we cover it in our guide to what size print to choose for your wall.

What colour and theme work in a bedroom

If I had to sum up what to look for in calming bedroom prints in one line, it would be this: something that looks like it's breathing slowly. Here's a quick guide based on your current palette:

Your bedroomWhat works
Sand tones, linen, light woodWarm light and soft horizons — works like Reverie
Whites, greys, Scandinavian or minimal styleStill water and near-monochrome tones — works like Calm
Soft blues, sage green, cool paletteQuiet blues and gentle reflections — works like Ocean Whisper
Warm, romantic, layered textilesDiffused light and dunes — works like Reverie

If you're torn between two colours, always go with the more muted one: in the bedroom, understated wins over time.

Three works made for above the bed

These three pieces bring exactly what a bedroom asks for: calm, intimacy and a palette that never tires the eye.

Which paper to choose: matte cotton or pearl

In the bedroom, where light is usually softer and the work is seen up close, the paper matters almost as much as the image itself:

If you're unsure which finish suits your work and your wall, we compare all four — including canvas — in cotton paper, canvas or pearl, and you can see every size and price on our prints and materials page.

Bedroom wall art doesn't need to impress anyone. It just needs to still feel right the fifth time you glance at it, half-asleep.

One centred piece or a symmetrical diptych

Above the bed, symmetry brings calm. If you choose a single piece, centre it on the bed itself (not the whole wall, if the widths differ). If you prefer two pieces, keep them the same size and from the same tonal series, spaced about half the width of one piece apart. Avoid mixing very different formats above the bed — that kind of variety works better in a hallway or gallery wall, not in the spot where you sleep.

Frequently asked questions

What to hang above the bed?

Something serene: horizons, still water, diffused light or dunes, in a soft palette that complements your bedding and furniture. Avoid high-contrast images or busy scenes — above the headboard, calm wins over time.

What colour works best for a bedroom?

It depends on your current palette: sand tones and warm light if your bedroom is warm and wood-toned, soft blues or muted greens for a cool palette, and near-monochrome whites for Scandinavian or minimalist styles. When in doubt, choose the more muted tone.

What size should art above the bed be?

Between 50% and 70% of the headboard's width. For a queen bed (150–160 cm), one 70 × 100 cm piece or two 50 × 70 cm pieces. For a king size, a 100 × 150 cm piece or a triptych.

How much do they cost?

At Soul in Prints, fine art prints start from €65 and go up depending on size and material — matte cotton paper, pearl or canvas. Every piece is printed to order and shipped worldwide with tracking.
